Indonesia welcomed 6.48 million international visitors in the first six months of the year, up from the 5.29 million in 2016 year on year, confirmed Suharyanto, Head of Indonesia’s National Statistics Board at the beginning of this month.
It takes the country another step closer to achieving its ambitious tourism targets of 15 million visitors in 2017, increasing to 20 million in 2019.
Back in May, Indonesia climbed up to third place among 130 of the world’s most favourite Muslim holiday destinations after efforts from the government to entice more international visitors, according to the report named “Mastercard CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2017”. Indonesia scored 72.6 in this year’s report behind Malaysia (82.5) and United Arab Emirates (76.9). The ratings are based on several defining characteristics, including accessibility, ease of communication, environment, and Muslim-friendly services such as access to halal foods and prayer rooms. Indonesia’s Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the country could do better in both efforts and results. “Indonesia should’ve been number one,” Arief said. Indonesia targets 3.7 million international Muslim travelers this year, which is up on last year’s 2.7 million. The government continues to focus on Lombok in West Nusa Tengarra, known as the land of 1,000 mosques to be the country’s leading Muslim-friendly travel destination through promoting its natural beauty, resorts and local culinary.
Last year, Indonesia received a massive boost in its Halal tourism development after securing 12 out of 16 top prizes at our World Halal Tourism Awards 2016 (WHTA16), part of the International Travel Week (ITW) held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. After receiving the awards, Arief commented, “Next year, we have to dislodge Malaysia from first position. For next year’s WHTA, we will not give any chance for Malaysia to win any award”.
Back in force this year, we are proud to have Wonderful Indonesia as Diamond Sponsor of ITW Abu Dhabi 2017 and admire Arief’s ambition to boost Indonesia’s position in the GMTI to first.
